THE IMPORTANCE OF FUNDAMENTAL DUTIES FOR INDIA'S UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
In India, the concept of fundamental duties has been practiced since the Vedic Age. Fundamental duties are just as equal as fundamental rights and they cannot be separated from each other. Rights can only be enjoyed where there are someone has a duty to protect such right, it is same for fundamental rights.The fundamental duties remind citizens that they have some fundamental duties to follow, just as they have some fundamental rights to enjoy. The Fundamental Duties compel all individuals to respect India's national symbols, love its legacy, preserve its diverse culture, and contribute to its preservation. All Indians must also cultivate a spirit of brotherhood, protect the environment and public property, cultivate scientific temperament, avoid violence, and pursue excellence in all fields.
Fundamental duties are an integral part of the Constitution of India. The duties embodied in Article 51A of the Constitution of India contains greatest and highest ideals preached by our great political leaders, philosophers and social reformers. Fundamental duties are aimed to inform Indian citizen about their duties towards their society. Fundamental Duties also serve to warn citizens against anti-national and anti-social behaviour and to compel them to become sensible individuals. It also illustrates the importance of these duties in the country's overall growth and development.
